Reflection: For a long time, I looked outside of myself for the person who was going to fix the situation or finally provide the safety I craved. I looked to my partner, my career, my friends, and my family to be that anchor, but eventually, I realized that while people can love me, they cannot do the work for me. They cannot live inside my skin, breathe my air, navigate the thoughts in my mind, or feel the feelings I’m having. I have to be my own anchor.
When the world gets loud and uncomfortable, I take action and nurture myself. I stop, place my palm against my heart, and I say to myself, I got you. This is a biological hack that signals my nervous system to downshift. Placing my hand against my chest and experiencing those 3 special words, I got you in the middle of a storm brings me the comfort that I had been seeking from others. The best part is that the more I do this, the more I believe that I’m truly my own confidant. -Caroline Bloss
