Reflection: I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how our language shapes our reality, and specifically, how much the words we choose to speak out loud matter. It’s so easy to slip into casual, automatic phrases when people ask about our lives, dropping negative or self-deprecating comments into everyday conversations without even realizing it. But we can stop running on autopilot and choose the words we put out into the world much more carefully. This is where the power of reframing comes in. It’s about catching those harsh, default descriptions before they leave our mouths and intentionally choosing different words. Of course, this isn't easy and it takes a lot more thought, conscious effort, and energy to pause and rewrite a sentence in real time than it does to just let the negative default roll off the tongue. But this effort is worth it because our brains believe what our mouths repeatedly say. When we speak a limitation or a flaw out loud, we cement it into our reality. Conversely, when we voice an empowering perspective, we literally speak a new truth into existence for ourselves.
Here are two examples I’ve been incorporating into my own life: I tend to tell people, “I have anxiety.” I’ve decided to stop declaring this out loud and instead reframe it to, “I have an intuitive ability to read others, which allows me to connect with people on a much deeper level.” And instead of saying, “I am sad,” I choose to say, “I have a resilient heart that refuses to remain numb, allowing me to fully experience the rich, unfiltered depth of my own life.” -Caroline Bloss
